Combining an admiration for British blue-eyed soul/mod bands
such as Small Faces and the American power pop sound of bands
like Cheap Trick, the Boss Martians' driven brand of rock 'n'
roll comes to life on "Making the Rounds", the Seattle, WA
band's fourth album. Recorded in Seattle at Egg Studios
(Mudhoney, Nashville Pussy, Presidents of U.S.A.) and produced
by Johnny Sangster (Supersuckers, Young Fresh Fellows, the Makers),
"Making the Rounds" delivers 12 electrifying power-pop rockers.
Songs such as "Something's There", with its nod to Humble Pie,
the bold melodic sense of their pop anthem "Feel it Like Everyone",
the classic Northwest vibe of "She Was the One" (Sonics) and the
powerful title track, among other standout cuts. The Martians
are fronted by Evan Foster, who sings with a soulful approach,
much in the style of Steve Marriott and who handles guitar
duties with the melodic sensibility of Trick's Rick Nielsen and
the intensity of the Stooges' James Williamson. Longtime organ
player, Nick Contento's Hammond and electric piano work continue
to add depth to the Martians' hard-rocking pop songs. Rounding
up the band's sound is the rhythm section, consisting of bass
player Steve Davis and hard-hitting drummer Jason Reavis.
"Making the Rounds" proves that the Boss Martians truly are one
of the most vital and exciting rock 'n' roll bands to emerge from
Seattle in some time.
